Skål International and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, following a series of meetings between representatives of UNEP and Skål International. The object of the memorandum is to provide a framework of cooperation and understanding and to facilitate a collaboration between the two organisations to advance their shared goals and objectives in regard to working with the tourism sector to encourage and create a knowledge-sharing network to incorporate sustainability as one of the core values of any economic activity.

The memorandum also agrees regular dialogue and coordination meetings between Skål and UNEP

The main thematic areas of cooperation are the following:
1. Tourism and Resource Efficiency
2. Tourism and Climate Change
3. Education and Capacity Building for sustainable tourism

It was also agreed that both parties will proactively indentify project areas of common interest where fieldwork can be jointly implemented, using the expertise which each organisation brings.

President Hulya Aslantas is attaching great importance to the agreement and said it was very much in line with the vision of Skål and its commitment to the environment. She said the intention was to involve all members worldwide effectively working towards the implementation and understanding of Sustainable Development in Tourism.

President Aslantas recently announced that she had taken as her Presidential theme “Bridging the Cultures”. There is a greater need for travellers to interact and learn better about the cultures of the places they are visiting as part of the process of the ongoing sustainability in tourism. She said that only when we start understanding each others cultures, that we will be in a position to respect and live in peace with each other.
